How do I scan, photocopy, and print?
There are two locations:
- library ground floor scanning, photocopying
- student IT room scanning, photocopying, printing
Very important: to comply with UK copyright law, only 10% or 1 chapter or a book, or 10% or 1 article from a journal may be copied or scanned. Only bibliographies can be copied or scanned from dissertations.
SIA student cards are also photocopying, scanning and printing cards. When you receive your student card, it will be charged with an initial amount of credit, which you can use to photocopy and print. Scanning is free on any of the SIA machines.
To top up your printing and photocopying credit, you can add money via a debit or credit card via PaperCut. See the PaperCut FAQ for more info.
To scan:
Place your card on the reader.
If your card has been read successfully, a screen with the option Use Copier will appear. Select this option.
Select Scan and Send to create a PDF which will be delivered to your email address. (Alternatively select Scan and Store to send the PDF to a memory stick.)
Select Send to Myself, which means the PDF will be delivered to your SIA email address. (If the copier does not hold an address for you, or you want to send to another address, this is possible. Ask for help in the library if necessary.)
Place the book face-down on the glass, taking note of the guide marks which show the area that will be copied: A4, A3 etc.
Select Auto-Size on the right hand side of the screen. This gives access to options for size: choose the relevant one. (Sticking with Auto-Size means the copier tries to work out the size of your original: but it does not always get this right, so manually selecting a size is recommended).
Press the large green button.
Repeat for the next page(s) if needed.
Once you have scanned all your pages, press Start Sending.
A small message Converting image... will appear at the foot of the screen, followed by Sending...
As soon as you see either of these messages, log out. This will prevent anyone else accidentally using your printing credit.
The document will appear as a PDF in your email inbox within a few minutes. If you want to check how it appears on a larger screen than your phone, you are welcome to log in to your email on one of the PCs in the library.
Photocopying is also possible in the library. While scanning is free, there is a small charge per page for photocopying. Various copying options are available: please ask the librarians if you need help.
Printing is not possible in the library: please go the student IT room in the basement of building 30. This is underneath the Institute's front door, accessed via a staircase near reception.
